US Department of Justice charges three individuals with unlawfully diverting US AI technology to China

The US Department of Justice has charged Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang, and Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun with conspiring to unlawfully export advanced AI technology to China. The defendants allegedly used a front company to acquire NVIDIA Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) with AI applications, which they then attempted to smuggle to China without the required export licenses. The scheme involved falsifying shipping documents and routing the shipments through third countries to evade U.S. export controls. The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of 50 NVIDIA H200 GPUs intended for illegal export.
