California Governor Newsom signs first-of-its-kind “No Robo Bosses” Act

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed SB 947, the No Robo Bosses Act, barring employers in the state from relying solely on AI to fire or discipline workers. Under the bill, employers that “primarily” rely on AI output in such decisions must have a human reviewer corroborate them using sources including managerial evaluations, peer reviews, and personnel files. Affected employees must receive written notice that AI was used, a description of the data involved, and a human point of contact. The law reverses Newsom’s October 2025 veto of an earlier version, which had cleared both chambers with strong support. Author State Senator Jerry McNerney said AI “must remain a tool controlled by humans.” It is the first US law of its kind, following narrower rules in Illinois.
