It is reported that the Japanese government plans to support the development of a domestic AI model to reduce reliance on AI technologies from the United States and China. This initiative aims to prevent data from flowing abroad and to ensure accurate representation of Japan’s culture, customs, and systems. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) will provide Japanese-language data collected over the past two decades, collaborating with Tokyo-based AI development company Preferred Networks, Inc. to create a reliable AI model. Additionally, Sakura Internet Inc. is expected to host the model through data centers located within Japan. The government will offer financial and infrastructural support, including recruiting skilled engineers and maintaining high-quality Japanese-language data, to facilitate the development and adoption of this domestic AI model across central and local governments, as well as private companies.
