Indonesia needs 150,000 more engineers for the digital sector, according to government

It is reported that the Indonesian government has identified a pressing need for an additional 150,000 engineers over the next six years to bolster the nation’s digital industry, with a particular emphasis on the semiconductor sector, which alone requires approximately 15,000 engineers. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, highlighted this demand during the World Engineering Day 2026 event in Jakarta. To address this shortfall, the Ministry of Manpower is promoting vocational training programs aimed at workforce retraining and reskilling. Additionally, a strategic agreement between Danantara and ARM Limited has been established to train 15,000 engineers within the ARM ecosystem, focusing on enhancing Indonesia’s capabilities in semiconductor and chip design. These initiatives are part of Indonesia’s broader efforts to develop artificial intelligence technology and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, recognizing the integral role of engineers in driving sustainable economic development.
