Ex-New Jersey AG’s new firm has sued OpenAI and Microsoft three times since February

Former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin’s five-lawyer firm, Platkin LLP, has sued OpenAI and Microsoft three times since opening in February. Two of the cases accuse the companies of scraping hundreds of thousands of copyrighted articles to train generative AI products, and one alleges ChatGPT drove a Pennsylvania woman into a mental health crisis. The initial copyright suit, filed in the SDNY, was brought on behalf of publishers that collectively own almost 400 local and regional newspapers. OpenAI has retained Latham & Watkins, Morrison Foerster, and Keker Van Nest; Microsoft is represented by Orrick and Faegre Drinker.
