Sir Colin Birss, the UK’s incoming Master of the Rolls, has issued a position statement on the judicial use of AI, setting out a “cautious but positive” approach to adoption. Every AI output used in judicial work must be reviewed, verified, and approved by the responsible judge, who remains fully accountable. Only approved tools may be used, with UK data residency, enterprise data protection, and disabled web access required. Pilots have tested AI across summarization, transcription, redaction, accessible-language drafting, admin tasks, chronology-building, and document analysis. Birss becomes Master of the Rolls next month.
