UK government forms AI public services team with Meta and Anthropic backing

The UK government has announced a new AI initiative, supported by Meta and Anthropic, to modernize public services in areas such as transport infrastructure, national security, and employment support. Through the Alan Turing Institute, a $1 million investment from Meta will fund a year-long fellowship program placing leading British AI researchers in government roles. These fellows will develop open-source tools, including computer vision models to assist councils in prioritizing transport maintenance and infrastructure repairs. Additionally, some systems will be designed to operate offline or within secure networks, enabling defense and national security teams to utilize advanced AI models while safeguarding sensitive data. The UK has also partnered with Anthropic to build and pilot an AI assistant for public services, initially focusing on providing personalized career guidance to jobseekers, with a pilot expected later this year.
