Executives from leading tech firms OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are set to meet with senior U.S. officials at the White House on Thursday to discuss the energy infrastructure necessary to support artificial intelligence (AI), CNN reports, citing an insider.
The meeting is expected to include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google’s senior executive Ruth Porat, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Joining them will be Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, alongside top White House figures, including National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, according to CNN.
The discussion will focus on ensuring that the U.S. has the resources to power the growing demand for AI technologies, especially as data centers continue to expand. As White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson noted, “President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to deepening U.S. leadership in AI by ensuring data centers are built in the United States while ensuring the technology is developed responsibly.”
The rapid development of generative AI, which can produce text, images, and videos, has sparked excitement about its potential while raising concerns over misuse. It also places significant pressure on energy resources, with tech companies seeking to secure a shrinking supply of electricity for their AI and cloud computing operations.
