Taiwan’s TSMC tells Japan PM of plan to produce advanced chips in Kumamoto

It is reported that TSMC has announced a significant expansion of its Japanese operations, committing to mass-produce advanced 3-nanometer semiconductors at its second fabrication plant in Kumamoto Prefecture. During a meeting in Tokyo, CEO C.C. Wei informed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that the company is upgrading its original 6-nanometer blueprint to 3-nanometer technology to meet the surging global demand for AI data centers and autonomous vehicles. This move involves increasing the total investment for the second facility to approximately $17 billion (¥2.6 trillion), marking a major milestone as the first 3-nanometer production base in Japan. Prime Minister Takaichi welcomed the plan as a “thrilling” model for public-private collaboration, vowing continued government support to bolster domestic chipmaking and enhance national economic security. The updated strategy allows TSMC to capitalize on the artificial intelligence sector while alleviating resource constraints in Taiwan, further solidifying the partnership between the world’s leading chipmaker and the Japanese government.
