Google.org Funds AI Training Grants to Empower Public Sector Workforce

Reported by Google, this new initiative focuses on equipping U.S. public sector workers with AI skills to enhance service delivery across federal, state, and local governments. Announced at the Google Public Sector Summit in Washington, D.C., Google.org is providing $15 million in grants to the Partnership for Public Service and InnovateUS to foster responsible AI use in government.

Partnership for Public Service: Building AI Leadership

A $10 million grant will establish the Center for Federal AI, launching in 2025. This center aims to develop AI leadership through tailored programs for government leaders, fostering a community focused on integrating AI responsibly into federal operations. Max Stier, president of the Partnership for Public Service, said:

“AI is today’s electricity — a transformative technology that is fundamental to the public sector and to our society.”

The center builds on previous efforts that trained over 550 senior leaders across more than 50 agencies nationwide.

InnovateUS: Expanding AI Training Across State and Local Governments

An additional $5 million will support InnovateUS, which has trained 40,000 workers and partnered with over 100 agencies. This funding will expand AI programs to reach 100,000 workers across 30 states. New Jersey, an early member of InnovateUS, has already benefited from AI integration. Beth Simone Noveck, Founder of InnovateUS, remarked:

“By continuing to invest in upskilling programs… we can improve the effectiveness of how we solve problems while restoring much-needed trust in our government.”

A Broader Vision for AI in Public Service

The funding is part of Google.org’s $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, which promotes responsible AI use. These grants will not only improve service delivery but also address challenges in healthcare, infrastructure, and public safety.
