Florida launches probe of OpenAI, citing CSAM, other ‘evils’

The Florida Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has initiated an investigation into OpenAI, focusing on potential harms its AI product, ChatGPT, may have caused to minors. Uthmeier highlighted alleged links between ChatGPT and incidents of self-harm and suicide among minors, as well as its possible use in planning the April 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University. The Attorney General also expressed concerns about OpenAI’s data potentially being exploited by foreign adversaries. This probe follows OpenAI’s recent release of a Child Safety Blueprint aimed at combating AI-enabled child sexual exploitation. Uthmeier emphasized the need for AI technologies to support humanity without compromising safety and security, indicating that subpoenas to OpenAI would be forthcoming.
