South Korean Supreme Court survey finds widespread citation of AI-generated fake precedents

A survey of 360 South Korean judges conducted from October 6–16 found that 196 judges, or 80.7%, had seen nonexistent legal precedents cited in court cases, while 159, or 65.4%, had encountered false precedents. The survey also found that 41 judges had encountered false or nonexistent laws or regulations, and 164 judges said they had themselves cited false precedents. Nearly 92% of respondents said institutional measures were needed, including verification requirements and possible fines or disciplinary measures.
