Indonesia launches strict new digital protections for minors

It is reported that the Indonesian government has implemented Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025, known as PP Tunas, to enhance digital protections for minors under 18. This regulation mandates digital platforms to employ age verification technologies, obtain parental consent for users under 17 within 24 hours, and set default high privacy settings for minors while prohibiting their profiling for commercial purposes. Non-compliance can result in fines, service suspension, or complete blocking within Indonesia. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, emphasized that digital innovation should not compromise children’s safety, aiming to protect approximately 4 million vulnerable children from online threats such as trafficking and fraudulent recruitment schemes.
