The Cabinet Office of Japan’s Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters has launched a public consultation to gather input for the upcoming “Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2026.” This national effort aims to critically review the current IP framework and solicit opinions on new policy measures required for an economy rapidly being shaped by digital technology and data, particularly focusing on the challenges and opportunities presented by the AI era (including generative AI, copyright, and patent inventorship) and the push for stronger global standardization. The public comment period for this strategic retooling is set to run until 7 January 2026, as the government seeks to maximize intellectual capital and foster a new cycle of innovation.
