Canada federal budget dedicates over $1B to boost Canadian AI and quantum computing

In its 2025 federal budget, Canada’s federal government will allocate a $925.6-million commitment over 5 years to build large-scale sovereign compute capacity – Canadian-owned and operated data centres for cloud computing and AI – though $800-million of that was earmarked in the 2024 budget. On quantum, the federal government is proposing providing $334.3 million over 5 years to various government departments and agencies to help anchor quantum technology companies in Canada and provide pathways to adopting the technology in defence-related applications and industries. There are also a few other smaller AI initiatives announced in the budget, including that AI Minister Evan Solomon will work with industry to identify promising AI infrastructure projects and enter into memoranda of understanding (MOU) with those projects.
