US judicial panel advances proposal to regulate AI-generated evidence

It is reported that a US federal judicial panel has advanced a proposal to regulate the use of AI-generated evidence in court. At a meeting in New York, the Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules agreed to draft a rule -similar to those governing expert testimony -that would require rigorous scrutiny of AI-generated evidence for reliability and accuracy before it can be admitted at trial. While the committee agreed on the need for such a rule, there was less consensus on whether a separate rule is needed specifically for deepfakes, though members acknowledged the importance of preparing for future challenges as AI technology rapidly evolves. The proposed rule is expected to be reviewed for public comment in May 2025.
