US First Lady Melania Trump has hosted a roundtable in support of the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a bill aimed at protecting individuals from deepfake and revenge pornography, which has passed the Senate but not yet the House of Representatives. Among other measures, the bill proposes to make it a federal crime to knowingly publish or threaten to publish non-consensual sexual images on online platforms. It explicitly includes realistic, computer-generated intimate images depicting identifiable individuals. The bill clarifies that consent to create an image does not equate to consent for its publication. The bill would also require tech and social media platforms to remove child sexual abuse material and non-consensual sexual images within 48 hours of being alerted by a victim. It is expected that with the First Lady’s support, the bill will be accelerated as a “top priority” for House of Representatives to pass into law.
