US Energy Department announces new partnership with NVIDIA and Oracle to build AI supercomputer

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, NVIDIA, and Oracle, has announced a public-private partnership to develop the DOE’s largest AI supercomputer, aiming to accelerate scientific discovery. This initiative includes the construction of two AI supercomputing systems at Argonne: the Solstice system, featuring 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, and the Equinox system, with 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. Construction of Equinox is set to begin immediately, with delivery expected in 2026. These systems will integrate with the DOE’s extensive network of scientific instruments and data assets to tackle critical challenges in energy, security, and discovery science. Additionally, Oracle will provide immediate access to AI computing resources utilizing NVIDIA’s Hopper and Blackwell architectures, enhancing DOE researchers’ capabilities in AI-driven scientific research.
