Updates on Malaysia AI-specific legislation

It is reported that, speaking at the launch of the National Legal Academy, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said revealed that she has formally proposed a meeting between the Legal Affairs Division and the Digital Ministry to initiate discussions on formulating AI-specific laws. Minister Azalina (1) emphasised Malaysia is moving towards creating specific legislation to regulate AI given the inadequacy of current legal frameworks to address the unique challenges posed by AI; (2) referenced the EU AI Act as a model Malaysia could study, particularly in defining AI risk categories, responsibilities and legal safeguards; and (3) mentioned ongoing initiatives to enhance the digitalisation of the judicial system, including the implementation of voice-to-text systems and the expansion of digital document filings across all courts, particularly at the district level.
