UK Tech Secretary calls for “rebuilding Britain for the new world”

In her speech delivered at the Royal United Services Institute, UK Tech Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized the urgent need for UK to adapt to the disruptions caused by geopolitical shifts and technological advancements, particularly in AI, which she identifies as the defining currency of the future. Kendall argued that nations that master AI will lead in economic and military power, and stressed the importance of AI sovereignty, which for UK means reducing dependencies while fostering innovation and collaboration with international partners. Kendall outlined the government’s initiatives, including the launch of Sovereign AI, which aims to invest £500 million in British AI companies and enhance the nation’s capabilities in AI hardware, while also reinforcing partnerships with countries like Germany, Canada, and Japan. Kendall concluded by asserting that UK must actively shape its AI future to ensure national interests are prioritized, advocating for a proactive approach rather than retreating from technological progress.
