The UK government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has unveiled a major package of AI reforms and investments worth billions, aiming to create thousands of new high-skilled jobs and solidify the UK’s position as an AI leader. Key to this strategy is the development of regional AI Growth Zones, including a new South Wales zone receiving £10 billion of investment and anticipated to unlock at least 5,000 jobs, complemented by £5 million in government funding for each zone to boost business adoption and skills development. Furthering this initiative, a Sovereign AI Unit is being established with almost £500 million in backing, chaired by James Wise, to scale British AI capabilities, alongside a £100 million commitment for the government to act as a “first customer” for promising UK AI hardware start-ups. The strategy also includes up to £250 million for providing free compute resources to researchers and a £137 million focus on harnessing AI to accelerate scientific discovery, notably in drug research, alongside the appointment of new AI ambassadors like Simon Johnson, Tom Blomfield, and Raia Hadsell, all of which builds on £24.25 billion in private investment committed in the past month.
