UK could face ‘hacktivist attacks at scale’, says head of security agency

It is reported that at the annual CyberUK conference in Glasgow, the head of the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Richard Horne warned about the potential for “hacktivist attacks at scale” in the event of a conflict, which could mirror the impact of recent ransomware incidents affecting major British companies like Marks & Spencer and Jaguar Land Rover. Horne emphasized that nation-state threats are the most significant challenges the NCSC faces and urged all organizations to prioritize cybersecurity, embedding it into their corporate missions to mitigate risks and prevent catastrophic impacts from initial attacks. He noted that the UK should prepare for scenarios where paying ransoms to recover from cyber incidents may not be viable, echoing previous warnings about the precarious geopolitical climate and the role of cyberspace in ongoing tensions, particularly with Russia. Horne also highlighted the importance of utilizing advanced AI technologies to bolster defenses against cyber threats, as outdated systems may become increasingly vulnerable.
