South Korea to require advertisers to label AI-generated ads

It is reported that, based on a policy meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, starting in early 2026, South Korea will mandate that all advertisements created using AI be clearly labeled, in response to the rising number of deceptive online ads involving deepfake celebrities or fabricated experts promoting products such as weight-loss pills, cosmetics, and illegal services. Officials emphasized that these ads, often targeting vulnerable demographics like the elderly, threaten market integrity and consumer safety. The initiative includes revisions to telecommunications and related laws, increased monitoring, swift ad takedown procedures, and fines for non-compliance. Platform operators will also be held accountable for enforcing these rules. The policy comes amid broader concerns over AI misuse, including sexual abuse and blackmail involving manipulated content. The government plans to introduce harsher penalties and expand regulatory oversight through agencies like the Food and Drug Safety Ministry and Korea Consumer Agency, with AI aiding enforcement.
