South Korea to launch ‘national scientists’ program to curb AI talent exodus

It is reported that South Korea is launching a “national scientists” program to address the accelerating exodus of top science and engineering talent, particularly in AI. The initiative aims to select approximately 20 scholars annually over the next five years, providing them with presidential certificates, research grants, and institutional support to foster a cohort of elite scientists who can serve as role models. The government also plans to improve research stability by allowing concurrent industry positions, expanding post-retirement research support, and establishing a corporate researcher development fund. Additional measures include easing administrative burdens, considering military service reforms for researchers, and enhancing computing resources by acquiring 260,000 NVIDIA GPUs. To strengthen regional AI talent, the government will expand AI-focused science high schools and foster partnerships between leading institutes and local universities. Furthermore, there are plans to attract 2,000 outstanding foreign scientists by 2030 and support international students in settling in Korea through enhanced visa assistance.
