The first official day of campaigning for South Korea’s presidential election has launched, with major candidates submitting their top 10 pledges to the National Election Commission. Candidates across the board promise stronger push for AI development. It is reported that Lee Jae-myung, the candidate for the Democratic Party, pledges to (1) increase AI-related spending beyond advanced countries’ average, to attract more than 100 trillion won in private-sector investment; and (2) build “AI highway” connecting data centers, powered by over 50,000 high-end GPUs. In contrast, Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party proposes a less aggressive approach regarding promises requiring massive fiscal spending, and pledges to (1) prioritize expanding AI talent pool, to educate 200,000 young AI experts, and (2) to support AI startups and next-generation AI chip development. Both candidates support broader AI applications in defense industry.
