It is reported that South Korea has launched an “AI Squid Game,” a government-sponsored tournament to identify leaders in homegrown AI development, aiming to become a global AI powerhouse. The competition involves rigorous evaluation and elimination of AI foundation models, which are evaluated every six months by a panel of judges overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT. Naver and NCSoft were eliminated due to using foreign tech or model performance. LG AI Research, SK Telecom and Upstage remain in the running. Two winners are expected to be announced in early 2027. With significant state-led investment and private sector ambition, South Korea aims to build indigenous AI models challenging global leaders like ChatGPT, creating an “AI Highway.”
