South Korea’s Industry Ministry has announced that the Financial Services Commission’s advisory board approved a 250 billion won ($166 million) investment in local AI chip startup Rebellions, which designs neural processing units (NPUs) for AI computations, as part of a government initiative to develop a competitive domestic semiconductor industry. This decision, made during a fund management committee meeting for the “National Growth Fund,” represents the first direct investment under the “K-Nvidia” initiative, aimed at fostering a homegrown AI chip company in response to increasing competition from U.S. firms like Nvidia. The funding will facilitate Rebellions’ mass production of NPU chips and the advancement of next-generation AI semiconductors, reflecting South Korea’s strategy to enhance its position in the AI supply chain and decrease reliance on foreign technology amid rising demand for high-performance computing chips.
