Singapore must train more people to build AI, official says

Leslie Teo, senior director at AI Singapore, has cautioned that the nation’s current focus on producing certified AI users may not suffice; there is a pressing need to cultivate more AI builders. This concern arises as companies increasingly adopt AI technologies, potentially reducing the demand for junior employees. Teo suggests that the government should intervene to treat early-career training as a public good, especially as firms scale back on the training traditionally provided to new hires. He also highlights the challenge posed by the rapid evolution of AI, noting that formal training programs may become outdated by the time they are implemented. This situation is reflected in the job market, where the percentage of fresh graduates securing full-time permanent positions declined to 74.4% in 2025 from 79.4% the previous year.
