It is reported that, in a parliamentary hearing, the Productivity Commissioner Stephen King denied recommending changes to Australian copyright laws to include a text and data mining exemption for AI in its interim report on harnessing data and digital technology which was released in August 2025. Commissioner King said that its report had only included a case study on copyright law, with the recommendation that government and regulators undertake analysis to ensure laws are equipped to deal with AI. However, Commissioner King admitted the Commission had not conducted economic modelling of how proposed changes to copyright law would affect the creative industry but tried to downplay its position as open to change. Senators at the hearing criticised the lack of consultation with the creative industry by the Commission and called for the Commission to withdraw the contentious section of the report.
