Prime Minister says X could “lose right to self regulate”

It is reported that the UK government has announced it will criminalise the creation and solicitation of non-consensual AI-generated intimate images, often referred to as “deepfakes.” Speaking to Labour MPs, Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned X could lose the “right to self regulate”. “If X cannot control Grok, we will,” he said, adding the government would act quickly in response to the issue. The government also plans to unveil legislation to make it illegal to supply online tools used to create such images. The UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has initiated an investigation into Grok’s activities, with potential penalties including fines up to 10% of global revenue or a complete ban of the service in the UK. In response to mounting criticism, Grok has restricted its image generation features to paying subscribers, aiming to reduce misuse. However, concerns persist regarding the platform’s ability to prevent the creation and spread of harmful, non-consensual content.
