OMB memorandum on federal use of AI

The Office of Management and Budget Administration (OMB) has released the replacement for OMB M-24-10 (now M-25-21), required under President Trump’s Executive Order 14179. The new memorandum provides guidance on federal use of AI based on the three principles: (1) “agencies must remove barriers to innovation and provide best value for the taxpayer” (i.e. remove bureaucratic requirements, develop public AI strategy, maximise existing investments); (2) “agencies must empower AI leaders to accelerate responsible AI adoption” (i.e. set expectations for workforce on appropriate AI use, identify Chief AI Officers); and (3) “agencies must ensure their use of AI works for the American people” (i.e. implement minimum risk management practices for high impact AI).
