New AI minister says Canada won’t ‘over-index’ on AI regulation

It is reported that Canada’s new AI minister, Evan Solomon, speaking at an event organised by the think tank Canada 2020 in Ottawa, has stated Canada will shift away from heavy regulatory focus (i.e. move away from “over-indexing on warnings and regulation”) and instead prioritize harnessing AI’s economic benefits. Minister Solomon emphasized scaling up Canada’s AI industry, driving adoption, and ensuring Canadians have trust and sovereignty over the technology, while maintaining a regulatory emphasis on data protection and privacy—acknowledging that previous AI regulation efforts have stalled, international constraints are difficult to implement, and Canada will not act alone but rather build regulation step by step in collaboration with others.
