NDAA would mandate new DOD steering committee on AGI

The draft text of the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act is revealed, and it appears to mandate the Secretary of Defense to establish an “Artificial Intelligence Futures Steering Committee” by 1 April 2026, co-chaired by the Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with members including service vice chiefs and other top officials. This committee is tasked with developing policies for evaluating, adopting, governing, and mitigating risks associated with advanced AI systems, including those approaching artificial general intelligence (AGI). Additionally, it will analyze emerging AI models and technologies that could lead to AGI, assess the operational impacts of integrating such AI into Department of Defense systems, and examine adversaries’ advancements in this field to develop counter-strategies.
