MCMC investigates misuse of AI by X

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating the misuse of AI on the social media platform X, particularly concerning the manipulation of images of women and children to produce obscene and harmful content. The MCMC emphasises that creating or disseminating such material is an offense under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which prohibits the misuse of network services to transmit content that is obscene, indecent, or grossly offensive. Additionally, with the enforcement of the Online Safety Act 2025, all online platforms and licensed service providers are required to implement preventive measures to curb the spread of harmful content, including obscene material and child sexual abuse material. The MCMC plans to summon representatives from X to seek clarification on these issues and will initiate investigations against users suspected of breaching the Act.
