It is reported that Malaysia has signed a deal with global semiconductor giant ARM. Under this deal, Malaysia will pay ARM Holdings $250 million over 10 years to acquire the firm’s chip design plans for local manufacturers. The deal will also involve the training of 10,000 engineers in Malaysia, with the hope that this will allow domestic producers to scale up, creating 10 local chip companies with yearly revenue of $1.5 to $2 billion each. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the partnership aligns with the National Semiconductor Strategy, which aims to position Malaysia beyond a production hub and into a leader in integrated circuit (IC) design, semiconductor manufacturing, and advanced packaging. Prime Minister Anwar also called it the start of a “second semiconductor wave”.
