Japan to set up AI strategy taskforce

It is reported that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced the establishment of a task force focused on an AI strategy by this autumn 2025, with a directive for ministers to create a basic plan for AI development and utilisation by winter 2025. Prime Minister Ishiba emphasised the goal of making Japan the most supportive country for AI research and development, highlighting the need for the plan to address labor shortages and boost productivity. This initiative follows a new AI Promotion Act enacted in May 2025 aimed at promoting AI development and managing associated risks, which mandates the formation of the task force to oversee relevant policies and develop the strategic plan.
