At the AFR AI Summit, Australian Industry Minister Tim Ayres emphasised the critical role of digital technology and AI in shaping Australia’s economic future, productivity, and global competitiveness. Minister Ayres (1) outlined the government’s commitment to a “Future Made in Australia” strategy, focused on leveraging the nation’s strengths—such as stable governance, geographic position, and clean energy—to attract global investment and foster high-value industries; (2) stressed the urgency for Australia to actively participate in the development and adoption of AI, rather than passively consuming technology created elsewhere, to ensure national resilience and shared prosperity; (3) highlighted the importance of collaboration across government, industry, research, and unions to manage risks, set standards, and ensure that AI adoption leads to better jobs, higher wages, and social equity; and (4) advocated for a principles-led, inclusive approach to AI policy, aiming to anchor investment and capability domestically while listening to stakeholders and building on prior work, with a clear focus on both opportunity and responsible regulation.
