Director General Edwin Hidayat Abdullah has emphasised the urgent necessity for ASEAN regional collaboration to address the challenges of disinformation and deepfake content within the broadcasting ecosystem during a keynote speech at the Regional Workshop on AI disruption. Representing the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital, Abdullah advocated for the harmonization of standards and the creation of an interoperable mechanism across Southeast Asia to detect and label AI-generated content, noting that a fragmented regulatory landscape primarily benefits criminal entities. The broadcasting sector was also highlighted as a vital tool for public education to ensure equitable access to AI benefits and to mitigate social inequality, while national efforts in Indonesia continue to require digital platforms to implement protective systems for children and tools for content labeling. Abdullah also expressed appreciation for existing regional initiatives, such as the ASEAN Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics and the ASEAN Responsible AI Roadmap (2025–2030), as foundational steps toward building a unified and ethical digital landscape.
