The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has released a comprehensive new strategy outlining how it will regulate AI and biometric technologies, focusing on high-risk use cases such as police facial recognition and automated decision-making (ADM) systems in public services and recruitment. According to the strategy, in addition to updating guidance and developing a statutory code of practice for AI and ADM, the ICO will also publish guidance and audit police use of facial recognition technology to ensure compliance with data protection law, and proactively address emerging AI risks—such as agentic AI and systems inferring subjective traits—by engaging with industry, publishing reports, and setting rigorous standards to safeguard people’s rights and build public trust.
