The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust has held a hearing titled “Artificial Intelligence: Examining Trends in Innovation and Competition” to examine critical issues affecting the competitive landscape within the AI sector. Republicans and Democrats both recognized the benefits of AI and that the technology is advancing at a fast clip, but disagreed on whether to lean toward less regulation or more regulation, similar to the EU AI Act. For example, Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wis) advocated for a free enterprise, open competition and ‘light touch’ regulatory approach, while Jerry Nadler (D-NY) suggested a strong, independent oversight by the Federal Trade Commission to protect consumers against unfair business practices.
