Over 400 US-based actors, writers, directors, producers, musicians and executives have signed an open letter calling on the US government to uphold copyright laws for the training of AI. The open letter has been sent to the White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) in response to public submissions on the US AI Action Plan. The letter challenges recent submissions from OpenAI and Google that claim domestic law either allows or should allow AI companies to train on copyrighted works, without any compensation or permission of copyright owners. The group behind the open letter is led by actress Natasha Lyonne, and includes Bette Midler, Aubrey Plaza, Ava DuVernay, Paul Simon, Mark Ruffalo and hundreds of others.
