Government to name and shame AI misusers; no criminal charges

It is reported that the Japanese government is considering new regulations to (1) identify and disclose critical infrastructures using AI; and (2) “name and shame” AI companies responsible for serious human rights violations (especially for disinformation, deepfakes and discrimination). If a business is suspected of a violation, they need to cooperate with government for an investigation – however, the proposed legislation is expected to not impose criminal penalties or fines. The bill is expected to be introduced in February 2025 during the ordinary Diet session. Further details have yet to be revealed.
