G7 skirts touchy AI safety discussion

It is reported that G7 leaders, during their summit in Canada, opted for a cautious approach regarding the regulation of AI, avoiding strong language on safety and risk management. Instead, they focused on promoting the adoption of AI, as reflected in their draft statement titled “AI for prosperity” (seen by Politico), which states – “We must better drive innovation and adoption of secure, responsible and trustworthy AI that benefits people, mitigates negative externalities, and promotes our national security”. This is in contrast to the 2023 G7 meeting in Hiroshima which resulted in the development of a voluntary code of conduct for companies developing the most advanced AI models. That code of conduct was namechecked only once in the current G7 draft.
