San Francisco-based Fearn AI has raised $5.5 million to expand its AI-powered patent filing service, which it claims can speed up the process more than tenfold. The company charges fixed fees of $2,500 for a provisional patent application and $9,000 for a non-provisional filing, replacing the hourly billing model of traditional law firms. Founded by former Morrison & Foerster patent expert Han Kim and AI specialist Angela Gao, Fearn offers refunds if the US Patent and Trademark Office refuses protection on a non-provisional application. Investors include Kindred Ventures, a16z Speedrun, Designer Fund, and Essence VC. Fearn targets software, hardware, robotics, semiconductors, defense, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals, and joins a growing patent-tech field alongside Lightbringer, Patentext, and Idea Clerk.
