The European Parliamentary Research Service has released a briefing paper that highlights the European Parliament’s key positions and policy reform ideas regarding AI in defence, notably: (1) advocating for regulation and a global ban on lethal autonomous weapons (LAWS); (2) promoting responsible military AI development through human control, legal accountability, and ethical guidelines; (3) emphasizing robust cybersecurity and international cooperation via the UN on military AI’s dual-use nature; and (4) despite the AI Act’s exclusion of military applications, the Parliament urges the EU Council to prevent LAWS without meaningful human control and push for their international prohibition under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
