The European Parliamentary Research Service has released a document setting out the implementation timeline of the EU AI Act. The key dates being: (1) 2 February 2025 – chapters on general provisions and prohibited AI practices apply; (2) 2 May 2025 – GPAI codes of practice to be ready; (3) 2 August 2025 – Chapter 3 section 4 (notified authorities and notified bodies in high risk AI systems), Chapter 5 (GPAI models), Chapter 7 (governance), Chapter 12 (penalties, except for fines for GPAI model providers), article 78 (confidentiality in post market monitoring) apply; (4) 2 February 2026 – guidelines on practical implementation of classification rules for high risk AI systems to be provided; (5) 2 August 2026 – remaining provisions take effect, including fines for GPAI model providers, except for article 6(1); and (6) 2 August 2027 – article 6(1) on classification rules for high risk AI systems and corresponding obligations apply.
