It is reported that the European Parliament has disabled AI features on lawmakers’ and staff’s work devices due to cybersecurity and data protection concerns, as communicated in an internal email. The Parliament’s IT department determined that it could not ensure the security of data processed by these features, which often utilize cloud services that send data off the device. This action follows the EU’s strengthened data security policies and previous measures, including a ban on TikTok and a recommendation to replace Microsoft software with European alternatives. The disabled AI features include writing assistants and enhanced virtual assistants, while essential applications like email and documents remain unaffected. The Parliament advised lawmakers to apply similar precautions on personal devices and to be cautious with third-party AI apps.
