The European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) has recommended rejecting the AI Liability Directive (AILD), arguing it is redundant given the recent enactment of the AI Act and the revised Product Liability Directive, which already place significant obligations on AI developers and users. IMCO expressed concerns about the lack of market data, the Commission’s reliance on hypothetical scenarios in its impact assessment, and unresolved issues regarding definitions and procedures. The committee warned that proceeding with the AILD without evaluating the effects of existing legislation could hinder innovation, strain national legal systems, and promote “predatory litigation.”
