EU lawmakers sent joint letter to European Commission warning against ‘dangerous’ moves to water down AI rules

It is reported that several lawmakers behind the EU AI Act negotiators (including Alex Voss, Brando Benifei, Svenja Hahn, and Kim van Sparrentak) of the European Parliament have sent joint letter to the European Commission raising “great concern” about the GPAI Code of Practice for making risk measures related to fundamental rights and democracy. In particular, the letter (1) warns the Commission to not undermine core concepts and safeguards integrated in the EU AI Act; (2) argues that the current draft version of the GPAI Code of Practice risks hampering cooperation along the AI value chain and could weaken the law’s enforcement, potentially sparing foreign tech companies from core obligations; (3) points out the misalignment between the EU AI Act and the GPAI Code of Practice with regard to systemic risks; and (4) urges the Commission to launch a new support program for the region’s semiconductor industry targeting investment in AI chips and other technological gaps, but noting the slow progress of the original 2023 Chips Act.
