The deadline for EU AI Act prohibitions on certain AI systems and requirements to ensure sufficient technology literacy among staff have officially lapsed. Prohibited systems include social scoring systems, real-time facial recognition and other forms of biometric identification that categorize people by race, sex life, sexual orientation and other attributes, and “manipulative” AI tools. Fines for breaches of the EU AI Act can be up to 35 million euros ($35.8 million) or 7% of their global annual revenues — whichever amount is higher. However, the fines will not kick in for some time, as the next deadline is 2 August 2025 by which EU member states must confirm who the competent authorities are and implement rules for penalties and fines.
